I saw The Odyssey on Saturday, September 12, so it’s been a little while since then.
In short, I thought it was absolutely wonderful. It’s the kind of film that is meant to be experienced in a theater, and it makes full use of the IMAX format. At times, it even had the same kind of thrill as a Disney theme-park ride.
The scenes of the ship being tossed about on rough seas, the battle scenes surrounding the Trojan Horse—the visuals were so convincing that I felt as if everything were unfolding right in front of me. I think a lot of that comes from Nolan’s commitment to shooting on film and minimizing the use of CGI.
The story, too, was flawless. For example, things like why the characters speak with American accents and what the apparitions the protagonist sees actually are—all of it made complete sense to me by the end of the film.
To be honest, I cried during one particular scene in the second half. I don’t usually think of myself as someone who cries at movies, but I was genuinely moved. It’s definitely my favorite film of the year.
I hope Nolan keeps making films for many years to come.
