Summer Apocalypse
I read Summer Apocalypse, the second book in Kiyoshi Kasai’s Yabuki Kakeru series. The story, in which thought, history, and religion are intricately intertwined, was fascinating. Simone Weil is one of my favorite philosophers, and I remember reading Gravity and Grace when I was a student. I was astonished that Kasai made Weil’s idea of “the void” the central theme and published the work back in 1981. Hikaru Okuzumi’s commentary was also excellent—about the freedom that comes from accepting constraints.
